Project description
Located along beautiful, spring-fed Palmerston Lake, the owners wanted to renovate their aging cottage. They envisioned timber-framed elements with a large great room and new master bedroom suite. Jim translated their vision and needs into an intriguing exterior with stone and timber-framed elements, and the spacious decks and patios make it easy to enjoy the outdoors. The breathtaking Canadian Shield creates an amazing view of Palmerston Lake, with the cottage facing southwest. Jim was able to work with the existing landscape and customize the design for the sloping terrain.
The 1,400 sq ft craftsman-style cottage includes two bedrooms on the main level, one bedroom on the lower level, and a separate cabana behind the cottage. The interior boasts plenty of extra room for not only guests, but also generous amounts of space for outdoor equipment, boating supplies, and all the gear necessary for great and memorable adventures. Lake access has been optimized with side access to the waterfront. Interior design features include local pine flooring and timber framing. Floor-to-ceiling arched windows match the arched bottom chord and “V-joint” tongue and groove pine cathedral ceiling—all notable craftsman-style features.
The picturesque, quaint home has an expansive wrap-around deck, king post, and arched bottom chord supported by brackets and embellished by Western Red Cedar split shake shingles. Jim opted for board and batten gable with a plinth of fieldstone. The fieldstone was thoughtfully carried through into interior details and the patio off the main deck as well. Finally, white windows and doors provide contrast with the grey siding, making the exterior “pop”.
